INS Vikrant: PM Modi Commissions India’s First Indigenous Aircraft Carrier

NB BUREAU

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned India’s first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant on Friday, that put India into a select league of countries with domestic capability to build such large war ships.

The Prime Minister commissioned the carrier, built at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore, at a function organised at the Cochin Shipyard Limited here.

With the commissioning of Vikrant, India joined a select group of nations having the niche capability to indigenously design and build an aircraft carrier.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Kerala Governor Arif Mohamad Khan, state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and top officials of Navy and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

Modi unveiled a plaque to mark the induction of INS Vikrant, named after its predecessor that played a crucial role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, into the Navy.

The carrier is equipped with state-of-the-art features.

Brief Points Of PM Modi’s Speech:

– Today, here on the coast of Kerala, India, every Indian is witnessing the sunrise of a new future.  This event being held on INS Vikrant is a shout out to India’s rising spirits on the world horizon.
– Vikrant is huge, Vikrant is a giant.  Vikrant is special.  Vikrant is not just a warship.  This is a testament to the hard work, talent, influence and commitment of 21st century India.
– If the goals are quick, the journeys are long, the ocean and the challenges are endless – then India’s answer is Vikrant. Vikrant is a unique reflection of India becoming self-reliant.
– Today India has joined those countries in the world, which manufacture such a huge aircraft carrier with indigenous technology.  Today INS Vikrant has filled the country with a new confidence.
– INS Vikrant is an example of the Government’s thrust to make India’s defence sector self-reliant.
– Every part of INS Vikrant has its own merits, a strength, its own development journey.  It is a symbol of indigenous potential, indigenous resources and indigenous skills.  The steel installed in its airbase is also indigenous.
– When India resolves to do something, no goal, no objective is unachievable. Today, India is one of the few nations building state-of-the-art defence technologies.
–  INSVikrant is a marvel of modern engineering. The cables used can reach from Kochi to Kashi. This is an example of Indian engineering prowess.
– Earlier, only developed nations could construct aircraft carriers like INS Vikrant. But now, India has joined this select league of Nations.
– Today also we ended another symbol of slavery, we unveiled a new naval ensign with a symbol taken from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
– Till now the identity of slavery remained on the flag of Indian Navy.  But from today onwards, inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji, the new Navy flag will fly in the sea and in the sky.
–  From Mauryas to Guptas, India’s naval prowess has been famous even in historic times. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had built an impressive navy. The British put various rigid & regressive measures and weakened our naval prowess.
– Chhatrapati Veer Shivaji Maharaj built such a navy on the strength of this sea power, which kept the enemies sleepy.  When the British came to India, they used to be intimidated by the power of Indian ships and trade through them.
– When Vikrant descends to protect our maritime zone, many women soldiers of the Navy will also be stationed there.  With the immense power of the ocean, boundless female power, it is becoming the lofty identity of New India.
– INS Vikrant will also use the power of our women. The way there is no limitation to the sea, there will be no restrictions for our women too.
– In our New India, we have broken all shackles for women. For the first time, the Indian Navy has opened all fields to women. Women Power will now shape the strength of our armed forces.
– Self Reliance is going to become a strong pillar in India’s growth. From INS Vikrant to Tejas, made-in-India defence technology is strengthening our nation.
– Another landmark decision has been to allocate 25% of the defence budget for indigenous sourcing and to propel research & development in the sector.
– Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are getting 2 new defence corridors. This step for Atma Nirbhar defence will also create new employment opportunities for India.
– Just like small drops of water create an ocean, it is time every citizen in the country becomes Vocal For Local to take forward our resolve and goal of an Aatma nirbhar Bharat
(Self Reliant India).
– In the past, security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region and the Indian Ocean have long been ignored.  But, today this area is a major defense priority of the country for us.  That’s why we are working in every direction, from increasing the budget for the Navy to increasing its capability.
– From offshore patrol vessels, submarines to aircraft carriers, Indian Navy is strengthening at a rapid pace.
– An indomitable Navy will also boost maritime trade & commerce in the country.
– As India grows and becomes stronger we will be able to work towards the providing solutions for humanity.
